Public Diplomacy: Waging Peace Around The World

I'm delighted to be here today in a room full of such senior public relations professionals from across the world. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to discuss something that affects all of us--how we can build more positive, constructive relationships between people of many different countries, cultures and faiths. .

Time for a hysterical overreaction

We've been having an argument in the office and I'd like you to settle it. On their side is sweet reason and a sense of proportion. On my side? I think the maths is on my side.

The question is this - how seriously should we take the latest fiasco at the Home Office?

I'll put my basic case quite briefly. My faith in airport security has never been the same since I noticed that the man confiscating the shaving foam in my hand luggage (while leaving me with the razor) had the word HATE tatooed on his knuckles. But, call me naive if you like, I did imagine that security staff cleared by the Government's Security Industry Authority had been properly checked. Otherwise, what's the point of all that queueing and "Would you mind if I looked in your bag, Sir"?

Now it turns out that the checks are a sham.

Ron Paul uses Guy Fawkes to fire up campaign and raise $4.3m in a day

Guy Fawkes, a 17th-century English mercenary and terrorist who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, is an unlikely figurehead for a US Republican presidential candidate.

But Ron Paul is neither a run-of-the-mill Republican nor a typical presidential aspirant.

His supporters announced yesterday that they had smashed Republican fundraising records by hauling in a total of $4.3 million (£2 million) for his campaign from more than 37,000 donors over the previous 24 hours.

And they did it online, through the website ThisNovember5th.com, where Mr Paul’s speeches have been mashed up with clips of the film V for Vendetta, in which a sinister – but ultimately heroic – terrorist modelled on Fawkes destroys a fascist government in Britain.

Brown urges ban on energy sector investment in Iran

GORDON Brown is to seek a worldwide ban on oil and gas investment in Iran and has promised an approach of "hard-headed intervention" when it comes to failed states.

In his first speech to the City of London Lord Mayor's banquet as Prime Minister, he called on the European Union and the United Nations to impose tougher sanctions on energy and financial sector dealings with Iran.

A degree is no guarantee of full-time jobs or equal rights

A quarter of graduates do not have full-time jobs more than three years after getting their degrees, according to government figures.

The Higher Education Statistics Agency, which examined the career progression of 24,000 people, also found that 20 per cent of those who were employed were not working in graduate occupations.

Women were more satisfied with their careers, although they were paid less than men in their first jobs. "There was a £1,000 difference in the average salaries of male and female graduates who had studied full-time, although a higher proportion of men were in higher-paid work," the report said.

"There was a larger gender difference among part-time graduates, where the average male salary was £3,133 higher than for females.
